2009 French Trip

In April 2009, a group of children, accompanied by Mrs Wilson, Miss Smith, Madame Guy, Mrs Hunter and Mrs Woodbridge visited the Chateau de Grande Romaine in France.

Mrs Wilson called at lunchtime to say that they had arrived at the chateau safety; their crossing was good and the sun is shining!  The ferry crossing was very calm and no-one was sea-sick!  She will call later this evening to give us an update.

8.15pm - Mrs Wilson called to say that everyone is safe and well and having a wonderful time; the children are all outside taking part in an outdoor activity.  They are all very excited and not looking like they will be ready for bed at 9.30pm!  Lights go out at 10pm after a room inspection from the staff; they are looking forward to tomorrow's activities and, so far, everything is going extremely well.  Mrs Wilson and the other staff have commented that the children all behaved impeccably on both the coach and ferry journey and they are very proud to be with the children, so thank you parents for lending them to the school for the next 5 days!

Tuesday 21st April 2009

Mrs Wilson called at 6.30pm to say that today has been a glorious day with brilliant sunshine and most of the children have been in shorts and t-shirts.  They visited the local market and practised their French-speaking skills with the local sellers.  From there they went to Notre Dame to do some sketching; the children were so engrossed with it all that they didn't want to leave!  This afternoon they went on a coach tour of Paris and everyone had their cameras glued to their faces taking pictures of all the sights; they saw the Eiffel Tower and can't wait til Thursday when they get to climb up it!  This evening they have played basketball, tennis and football and enjoyed a wonderful meal of spaghetti bolognese and chips (a mixture of Italian and English food despite being in France!).  Later this evening they are holding a 'fashion show'.  The children have been given various different materials, including black bags etc, from which to make clothes which they will then model to each other!

Mrs Wilson and the other staff have been very impressed with the children's behaviour. Everyone has behaved extremely well and they are all a credit to the school and the staff are really pleased with them.

Wednesday 22nd April 2009

7.20pm - Mrs Wilson called after another exciting day; this time visiting the beautiful Palace of Versailles.  The children marvelled at the Hall of Mirrors and the wonderful splendour of the place.  They ate lunch in the gardens in the sunshine; suntans are beginning to develop because of the gorgeous weather.

Last night's fashion show was fun; we can't wait for the photos once they return.  Tonight they are having a 'messy night'; all I know is it involves yoghurt so we will have to wait until tomorrow to find out more.

Everyone is having fun and really enjoying themselves.  Last night the boys were the first to get to sleep!  The girls were awake a little longer than desired (!) but they were quiet so no-one really minded.

Tomorrow they are off to the Eiffel Tower and Sacre Coeur - the most memorable part of the trip for me (Mrs Roberts) when I went on the trip 3 years ago..... so another update tomorrow!

Thursday 23rd April 2009

6.30pm - Mrs Wilson phoned to say that, again, they had had a wonderful day; they have been so very lucky with the weather and it was very hot and sunny.

All the children and staff went to the top of the Eiffel Tower to take photos and admire the views of Paris; you can literally see for miles and miles and the views are amazing - wait til you see their photos!

This was followed by a boat trip along the River Seine, where they ate lunch as they watched the world go by!

Then they visited the beautiful Sacre Coeur in the afternoon and sat on the steps watching street entertainers and artists as the sun shone down on them.  This was followed by a walk around the Montmartre region of Paris which is an interesting area of the city and houses the home of the world famous 'Moulin Rouge' cabaret.

The children are getting ready for a disco this evening and an early wake-up tomorrow as they make their way back to Marlborough.

Now for the bit you might not want to hear but, hopefully, it will show just how much of a good time they have had:
Lots of the children have said they 'dont want to go home' and 'I want to move out here' and 'can we stay here forever?'

They really have had an amazing time together and, just to repeat what Mrs Wilson and the other staff have said, all the children have been really well behaved and a pleasure to be with, so thank you for letting them join the staff on this trip.

Arrangements for their return:

The coach is currently expected to be back at school at 6.45pm tomorrow evening.  They are expecting to catch the ferry at around 3pm from Calais.  If they miss that one it will be an hour and a half later at 4.30pm before they leave; this would mean a later arrival back to school.  I will send a text message to all parents around 3pm tomorrow to let you know if they have caught the ferry and to let you know that they are expected to be on time.  After this time, you will need to ring the school phone - 020 8427 3087, where an up-to-date message will give you more accurate details of their expected arrival time.

Finally, I hope you have all had an 'anxious free' week knowing that your children have been kept safe and well, enjoying themselves, and that you have taken advantage of the daily updates that have been posted on here!  I look forward to sharing their photos with you once they return.

Here is out first batch of photos!
